Higher Marks for Matrics

The 2011 Matric results were a mixed bag, which reflects the group well. There were top achievers with multiple distinctions, and there were those who failed. The children who did not pass in our 94.4% ieb pass rate, did so as a result of failing two subjects, and in each instance this can be ascribed to an incorrect subject choice, often insisting on writing Maths and Science where clearly their interest and aptitude lay elsewhere.
We will be exploring these results with the fet parents in our Parent Info mornings this Saturday, as well as outlining some of the interventions that are being put in place for the 2012 matrics and the year groups below them. While matric results can be a very emotive issue, it is important to look at the statistics and the trends within the results. Dominican results have consistently improved each year from our first ieb exams in 2008. Over a third of our subject results are now in the levels 5–7 categories (A–C grades), and subject failures have also dropped to 4%. While our percentage of children able to study for degree and diploma courses continues to be above 80%, it is important for our children to examine carefully the quality of their results. Much emphasis will be placed on children knowing what results are needed and targeting their achievement in 2012.
